In this article the notion of competency as well as the origins of competencies within an educational scope are revised, in order to contextualize a theoretical framework that highlights the importance of current discourse around this theme. In the same way, the authentic assessment's theoretical backgrounds are revised. This kind of assessment facilitates proposal of an alternative to evaluate competencies through tools like portfolios. After a review of characteristics and factors which intervene in portfolios implementation, it is concluded that these tools are one of best options to understand the kind and level of domain achieved in relation with competencies. At the same time, the importance of reflection processes promoted by portfolios is emphasized.Downloads
